AAAA Mini Storage Packaging and Storage Tips Packaging Tips Do not procrastinate with packing your goods.  The safety of your goods during transportation will correlate directly with how well you packed.  Start packing 2-3 weeks in advance of your moving date.  Make a list of packing accessories that you’ll need.  Most of the packing aids can be purchased at our  AAAA Mini Storage locations.   Use good quality boxes that are strong enough to hold some weight.  To stack the boxes more effectively, you can also use boxes of the same size.  When selecting your boxes, take into consideration the weight of the goods, not just the size.  Use the  smaller boxes for the heavier items and larger boxes for the lightweight, bulky items.  Label the boxes, do not be afraid to be to be too descriptive; it can save you lots of time!        Wrap all dishware and glassware individually with tissue, packing paper or bubble wrap.   Do the  same for pictures, mirrors or any other fragile items.  Make sure to label the boxes “Fragile.”   Seal all boxes with heavy duty (quality) packing tape.  If you are storing appliances, make sure that they are clean and dry.  If you disassemble any furniture, be sure to place all of the nuts, bolts and screws into a small zip lock bag.  Attach the bag to the furniture item.  Be sure to tape all drawers shut when moving. Storage Tips Arrange your storage unit carefully.  Items that will be needed more frequently should be placed closer to the door.  Lay down cardboard or skids (pallet) on the floor of your unit.  When storing boxes, stack like sized boxes together with the heavier boxes on the bottom.  Most storage units are 8’ tall (we have some at 14’).   Utilize shelving to maximize the height of the storage unit. If storing furniture, remove legs to conserve space.  It is recommended that you lay cardboard on the storage unit floor to prevent scratching.  Place cardboard / pallet on the floor and stand sofas and mattresses on end.  Do NOT cover the items with plastic. If storing appliances, make sure that the appliance (i.e. refrigerator or freezer) is properly cleaned and dried.  Leave the doors slightly ajar for ventilation.   If storing equipment (i.e. lawn mower), make sure to drain all gasoline and oil from the engine. Metal tools and equipment should be cleaned and wiped with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil for protection against rust.  To protect items against dust, cover exposed items with old blankets.  Do NOT cover items with plastic.  Mirrors, windows, and pictures should be stacked on their side (vertically).  DO NOT STORE ANYTHING COMBUSTABLE, FLAMMABLE OR PERISHABLE IN THE UNIT.
